When it comes to losing weight, curbing cravings, and preserving precious muscle mass, there’s one consistent finding in the literature...protein intake is crucial.
A review article published in 2013, from the Department of Medicine in Sweden looked at 20 weight loss strategies (drugs, exercise, low calorie diets, etc…) among overweight and obese individuals. Their findings revealed that those subjects who were able to successfully maintain weight loss were associated with consuming more protein and even using meal replacement shakes.

The literature indicates that 0.8-1.0g of protein per kg of bodyweight is more than enough for great health and a lean body (sure, athletes might need a little more). So, if you weigh 160 pounds (or 73 kg), you would want to average about 58-73 grams of protein per day. However, most protein “pushers” will suggest 2-3x times that amount, which is absolutely crazy!

Research presented at the Obesity Society’s annual scientific meeting on Nov. 13, 2013 found that “eating a breakfast rich in protein significantly improves appetite control and may help women to avoid overeating later in the day.”
The women, aged 18-55 consumed either a protein-rich breakfast (30-39g of protein) or a low-protein breakfast (pancakes and syrup) and then asked to consume a standard lunch meal (whenever they were hungry), until they were comfortably full. All breakfast meals contained approximately 300 calories and similar quantities of fat and fiber.
Results of the study showed that participants had improved appetite ratings (lower hunger, more fullness, less desire to eat) throughout the morning and also consumed fewer calories at lunch after eating the protein-rich breakfast, rather than the low-protein breakfast.
This finding isn’t surprising and what it means to you is this:
